What Does “D” Mean in Fabric? Understanding Denier (D) in the Textile Industry
Filament yarns are usually described using “D” which stands for Denier.
For example: 40D, 60D.
Denier refers to the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn.
For example
40D means that 9,000 meters of yarn weighs 40 grams, while 60D means that 9,000 meters weighs 60 grams.
40D + 60D = 24S.
D and S are closely related. If you see a fabric specification using D and want to convert it to S.
the formula is D × S = 5315.
For example, if S = 40S, then D = 5315 ÷ 40 = 132.9D. If S = 60S, then D = 5315 ÷ 60 = 88.6D. Therefore, if a seller describes a fabric as 40D + 60D, it is equivalent to 5315 ÷ (132.9D + 88.6D) = 24S. Here, the “+” means that the two yarns are combined, resulting in the final S count.
If you see a fabric labeled as "80D," it is actually a 66.4S fabric. The lower the "D" value, the thinner the fabric.
