What’s actually inside your down/feather pillow? (Let's talk strictly about feathers)
Pillows are usually filled with down, feathers, or a mix of both. Today, I want to talk about the fillings most everyday consumers actually run into on the market.
First off, feathers are basically split into goose feathers or duck feathers.
When it comes to feather size parameters, you mostly see:2-4 cm，4-6 cm，4-8 cm
Here is the pricing rule of thumb: The shorter the feather, the more expensive it is; the longer, the cheaper. Also, goose feathers naturally cost more than duck feathers (and are much better for odor control).
If you’ve ever had a pillow that pokes and stabs your face, it’s almost certainly filled with 4-8 cm or 4-6 cm duck feathers. Why? Because it’s the absolute lowest-cost option, but it also gives the worst sleeping experience.
This is why so many people complain that down pillows are "trash." It's not a general product problem—it's because of cheap, low-grade fillings.
